On dense hair the honest constraint is how long you stand there, and the published wattage here is the highest of any conventional premium dryer we list. Shark also names a turbo concentrator among the six attachments, which is the one that matters for getting through volume.

Shark publishes an airflow claim — speeds reaching 0 to 100 mph in less than a second — which is more than most makers say and still not a number you can compare against a competitor, because nobody else publishes one in those units. We report it as their claim.

1.65 lb and a published 96.1 in cord. On a twenty-minute dry, both of those matter more than any feature on the box.

What’s wrong with it

No published heat- or speed-setting count, no decibel figure, and 120 V only. The 1,750 W rating also makes it the most expensive here to run, at roughly $21 a year.

Nine feet is the longest published cord on this page and one of the things nobody thinks about until they are tethered to a wall twenty minutes into drying thick hair. Zero of the ten competitor pages we looked at in research published cord length at all.

Five heat settings and three speeds is real granularity. Thick hair is often coarse, which tolerates more heat than fine hair does, but “tolerates more” is not the same as “needs maximum”, and having intermediate steps is how you find the setting that dries without cooking.

At 17.1 oz — about 1.07 lb — it is the lightest option here, which on a long session is the difference between finishing properly and giving up at eighty percent.

This is the one page where the SmoothStay makes proper sense. Thick hair is where raw wattage is closest to being the thing you actually want, and 1,875 W is the highest published figure in our whole registry, at a fraction of everything else here.

Three heat settings and two speeds is limited, but coarse thick hair is the type least penalized by a coarse range. Revlon also publishes a 1 in triple-coated ceramic grill with tourmaline ionic technology, which is more description than they give most of their tools.

It costs about $22 a year to run at the June 2026 US average rate — the most on this page, and still roughly three dollars a year more than the Dyson. That is not a reason to choose differently.

What’s wrong with it

1,600 W is the lowest conventional rating on this page. 1.8 lb is the heaviest published weight in our registry. If your complaint is that drying takes too long, you are being asked to pay the most for the least power in the heaviest body — and to hold it up for the longest session of anyone on this site.

None of that makes it a bad dryer. Its heat control is genuinely the best documented here, which is why it wins the fine-hair page. It is a precision tool being asked to do a volume job, and that is a mismatch rather than a defect.

Why turning the heat up does not work

Drying is evaporation, and evaporation is driven mostly by how much dry air moves across wet hair. Hotter air holds more moisture, so heat helps — but past a moderate temperature you are adding risk faster than you are adding speed, because the water is what was protecting the hair.

On thick hair the actual bottleneck is almost always that the outside of the section is dry while the inside is still soaking. No amount of temperature fixes that. Smaller sections and a concentrator nozzle do, because they get moving air to the middle.

Sustained airflow versus peak numbers

The honest problem with this whole page is that no manufacturer publishes airflow in comparable units. Shark states a figure in miles per hour; Dyson describes an air multiplier; T3 publishes nothing. Wattage is the only number that appears on more than one spec sheet in the same units, and wattage is a measure of electricity drawn, not air moved.

So for thick hair we use wattage as a rough proxy while being clear that is what we are doing, and we weight cord length, weight and attachment set heavily — because those are published, comparable, and decide whether you can actually finish the job.

Technique, which will help more than any purchase

  • Squeeze with a towel first, do not rub. Water you remove mechanically is water you do not have to evaporate.
  • Rough-dry to eighty percent before you section. Precision work on soaking hair is a waste of heat.
  • Section smaller than feels reasonable. If the underneath is still damp when the top is dry, the section is too big. This is the fix, and it is free.
  • Use the concentrator. On dense hair it is not a styling accessory, it is what gets air where the water is.

Why does my thick hair take so long to dry?

Almost always because the sections are too big, so the outside dries while the inside stays soaked. Smaller sections and a concentrator nozzle shorten the session more than a more powerful dryer does.

Is a higher heat setting faster on thick hair?

Marginally, and at a cost. Airflow does most of the drying; heat past a moderate setting adds risk faster than it adds speed. Coarse thick hair tolerates more heat than fine hair, which is not the same as needing maximum.
