Almost every specification that dominates a long-hair buying decision gets quieter, and two that nobody usually checks get louder.

The two things nobody checks
Nozzle precision. On short hair the airflow is close to your scalp constantly, and a wide, unfocused jet means you are heating skin as much as hair. A proper concentrator is worth more on a bob than on waist-length hair.
How close the tool gets to the root. On long hair you have several inches of runway before precision matters. On a pixie the entire style is within two inches of the scalp, so a tool that cannot work there cannot do the job at all — regardless of every other specification.
Burning your scalp is a genuine risk here
It is the practical hazard that is specific to short hair and it is rarely mentioned. When every section is close to the scalp, a plate or barrel at 400°F is close to the scalp too.
- Use a comb or your fingers as a barrier at the root.
- Work at lower temperatures than long hair needs — short sections straighten in one pass much more easily.
- Choose narrow plates and small barrels, which give more clearance around the tool.

Barrel-based styling needs length to wrap, which a bob does not have.
This is a mismatch of geometry, not of quality, and it is worth stating plainly before anyone spends flagship money.
An air styler works by wrapping hair around a barrel with airflow. Short hair does not have enough length to wrap more than a fraction of a turn, so most of the mechanism has nothing to work with. Dyson sells short and long configurations for exactly this reason, and even the short one assumes more length than a bob.
For short hair the smoothing and volumizing brush attachments are the only genuinely useful parts of the set — which is a very expensive way to buy a hot air brush.
