In research we fetched ten pages ranking for the main terms in this category. Not one published a running cost. Not one published a price-per-use figure. Not one named a product it would not buy. The question every reader is actually asking — is this genuinely six times better, or six times the price — was answered nowhere, in a category where the price spread runs from about thirty dollars to over four hundred.
That absence is odd, because the arithmetic is not hard and needs no lab. It needs a published wattage, a cited electricity rate, a stated usage assumption, and the willingness to show your working. We have all four.
People assume a powerful dryer is expensive to run. Work it out and the assumption collapses. Take the highest published wattage in our registry, the 1,875 W Revlon SmoothStay, at fifteen minutes a day five days a week — 65 hours a year. That is about 122 kWh, which at the June 2026 US average residential price of 18.34 cents per kWh is roughly $22 a year. The 1,300 W Dyson Airwrap, at the same usage, is about $15.
A seven-dollar-a-year difference between the most and least power-hungry tools we list. Electricity does not decide this purchase, and anyone telling you a low-wattage tool will pay for itself in energy savings is doing arithmetic they have not shown you. Every dryer page here carries this figure worked out; the running costs page puts them side by side.
Since running cost is negligible, the whole decision is the purchase price spread over how many times you use the thing. At five uses a week for five years — 1,300 uses — a $30 tool costs about two cents a use and a $500 tool about thirty-eight cents. The premium is real, and it is thirty-six cents.
Whether thirty-six cents a use is worth it is genuinely your call, and we are not going to pretend there is an objective answer. What we can do is take the adjectives out of it. Two things change the arithmetic more than the price does: how often you actually use it, and how long it lasts. A $400 tool used twice a month for two years is $2.08 a use. The same tool used daily for five years is twenty-two cents. Same product, ten-fold difference, and it is entirely about you.
Which is why every page in this section publishes the price ladder rather than a single worked example. You bring the price you are looking at and your honest usage; the table does the rest.
It would be lazy to conclude that expensive tools are a con. On published specifications, three things do reliably improve with price:

At five uses a week over five years, every $100 of purchase price works out to about four cents a use, so the honest premium between a cheap tool and a flagship is a few tens of cents per use. Whether that is worth it depends on how often you dry your hair and how long the tool lasts.
Their published specifications do not explain it on their own — the Supersonic states 1,600 W, less than a drugstore dryer. What you are paying for is motor and airflow engineering that no manufacturer publishes a comparable figure for, plus design and brand.
