Do you test the hair tools you recommend?
No, and we say so on every page. There is no lab, no test units and no test data here. What we do instead is compile every published specification from the manufacturer's own page, compute running costs and price per use, and name one product per roundup we would not buy.
Where do your specifications come from?
The manufacturer's own product page, with the URL linked under every spec block. Never from a retailer listing, a press release, another publication or memory. Where a figure is absent from that page, the row reads 'Not published' rather than being filled in.
Why do so many rows say 'Not published'?
Because the manufacturer does not state that figure. Cord length and decibels are blank most often — not one product in our registry publishes a noise figure, and T3 publishes no wattage at all. We leave the blanks visible because the absence is information.
How does this site make money?
Affiliate commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. There is no advertising and no sponsored content. Commission never decides which product we pick — every roundup names one we would not buy, and we earn nothing on those.
Why do prices sometimes not show?
Prices come from a live data feed and carry the date they were verified. If that data is more than 48 hours old it disappears automatically and the button says 'Check price' instead. No price is ever hand-typed into an article.

What wattage hair dryer do I need?
There is no single right answer, and wattage is a poor way to choose. Published ratings run from 1,300 W to 1,875 W, and the most expensive tools sit at the bottom of that range. Wattage reliably tells you one thing: what the dryer costs to run.
Are expensive hair dryers worth it?
At five uses a week over five years, every $100 of purchase price works out to about eight cents a use. Whether that premium is worth it depends almost entirely on how often you use the tool and how long it lasts, not on the product.
How much does a hair dryer cost to run per year?
Between about $15.50 and $22.36 for the tools we can compute, at 15 minutes a day five days a week and the June 2026 US average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kWh. The whole range across every price bracket is under seven dollars a year.
Are Shark hair tools as good as Dyson?
On published specifications Shark leads on wattage and attachment count, ties on warranty and voltage, and the FlexStyle adds a dryer conversion the Airwrap does not have. What no spec sheet settles is airflow, which nobody publishes in comparable units.
What hair tools should I buy first?
A dryer, then a hot air brush, then whichever of a flat iron or curling barrel matches what you actually do weekly. Air stylers are the last purchase, because they reward already knowing what finish you want.
Which hair tools are dual voltage?
Irons and curling barrels far more often than dryers. The ghd Platinum+ publishes universal voltage, and the T3 SinglePass StyleMax and Curl X publish 100 to 240 volts. Every dryer and air styler in our registry is single voltage.

What temperature should I straighten my hair at?
The mid-300s Fahrenheit for most hair. ghd fixes its Platinum+ at 365 degrees with no dial, and Dyson names 365 as the Corrale's starting point. Published research puts the melting point of the ordered keratin in dry hair at about 401 degrees.
Can heat damaged hair be repaired?
Not structurally. Heat past a certain temperature permanently changes the ordered keratin in hair, and hair is dead tissue with no repair mechanism. Products genuinely improve how damaged hair looks and behaves; the affected length still has to grow out.
How can I tell if my hair is heat damaged?
The most specific sign is a curl pattern that has gone straighter in patches — nothing else does that. Beyond it: strands that snap without stretching, splits appearing an inch or more up the shaft, and a clear texture change starting mid-length.
How often can I use heat on my hair?
There is no published safe frequency, and any specific number you read is someone's opinion. What is established is that damage accumulates with total exposure, so cutting sessions is the most effective change available — and it is free.
Do I need a heat protectant?
Yes. It puts a layer between the tool and your hair that slows heat transfer and reduces moisture loss. What it does not do is raise the temperature at which keratin changes, so it is not a license to turn the iron up.
Do ionic hair dryers make a difference?
Manufacturers say the ion output breaks up water droplets and neutralizes static charge. Because nearly every dryer now makes that claim, including drugstore models, it is not a useful way to choose between two of them.
Does air drying damage hair?
It avoids heat, which is a genuine benefit, but it keeps hair swollen with water for far longer, and wet hair is mechanically weaker. Neither approach is universally gentler — the honest answer depends on your hair and how you handle it while it dries.
What hair type do I have?
Roll a single clean strand between your fingers. If you can barely feel it, your texture is fine; if it feels like thread, it is coarse. Density is separate — how much hair you have — and curl pattern is a third axis on top of both.
Why won't my hair hold a curl?
Almost always because the curl was released while still warm. Hair sets in the shape it cools into, so letting each curl cool in your hand before letting go does more than raising the temperature. Damaged hair also holds shape badly.
