Hair Tools That Actually Work in Europe
A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins. It does not change the voltage. That distinction ruins a lot of hair dryers every summer.

The US runs on about 120 V and most of Europe on about 230 V. A plug adapter only changes the shape of the pins. A tool marked 100–240 V handles both and needs nothing but an adapter. A tool marked 120 V only needs a voltage converter, or it will be destroyed.

Adapter, converter, and the difference that costs people a dryer
These two words get used interchangeably in luggage aisles and they describe completely different objects. A plug adapter is a passive lump of plastic that lets an American plug fit a European socket. It changes nothing electrically. A voltage converter actively steps 230 V down to something a 120 V appliance can survive, and it has to be rated for the wattage of what you plug into it.
A 1,875 W hair dryer on a converter rated for 50 W is not a mistake you make twice. And a 120 V-only dryer plugged straight into a European socket through an adapter alone typically fails immediately, sometimes dramatically. This is the most common way a trip ruins a hair tool.
Most premium tools sold in the US are 120 V only
This surprises people, and it is worth stating plainly with the published figures. Dyson publishes 120 V for the Supersonic and 120 V for the Airwrap Complete Long. Shark publishes 120 V for the FlexStyle and 120 V for the SpeedStyle Pro. T3 publishes 125 V for the Featherweight StyleMax and the AireLuxe dryers.
Spending four hundred dollars does not buy you a tool you can take abroad. If anything, the flagship dryers are the least travel-friendly category on the site, because their airflow engineering is built around a specific supply.
What does travel
Irons and curling barrels are far more likely to be genuinely dual voltage than dryers, because they draw less power and the electronics are simpler. All three need nothing but a plug adapter.

How to check a tool you already own
The rating is printed on the tool itself — usually on the handle near where the cord enters, or on the plug. Look for a line like 120 V~ 60 Hz 1875 W or 100–240 V~ 50/60 Hz. A single voltage figure means single voltage. A range that spans 110 to 240 means dual voltage and you are fine with an adapter.
Do not rely on the retailer listing, and do not rely on the fact that the tool is expensive. Read the plate. It is the one place the manufacturer is legally obliged to tell you the truth, and it takes ten seconds. More detail in how to read a hair tool voltage rating.

Will my American hair dryer work in Europe?
Only if the rating plate shows a voltage range spanning 110 to 240 volts. Most premium US dryers, including current Dyson, Shark and T3 models, publish a single 120 or 125 volt rating and will be damaged by European mains even with a plug adapter.
