Independently researched — published specs, real running costs

Hair dryers, flat irons and stylers, picked by hair type

We haven’t tested any of these, and we say so up front. What we do instead: read the manuals, publish every spec side by side, work out what each tool costs to run, and name the one we’d skip.

How we research this

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which tool we pick or which one we tell you to skip. How this site is funded.

Units we claim to have tested

Every site in this category will tell you they tested twenty hair dryers. We didn’t test any, and we’re saying so up front. What we can do — and what none of them seem to bother with — is read the manuals, publish every spec side by side, work out what each tool actually costs to run and per use, and tell you which one to skip.

What we’d actually buy

The top pick from each roundup, with the category it won and a live price where one is available.

What makes this different

Every spec, in the same order

Wattage, heat settings, weight, cord, decibels, warranty — identical fields on every product, each linked to the manufacturer page it came from.

Running costs, computed

Watts times hours times a cited electricity rate, with the usage assumption stated. Not one of the ten competitors we fetched publishes this.

One pick we'd skip, every time

Every roundup names a product we would not buy and says why from published information. It costs us the commission, which is the point.

'Not published' stays visible

Where a manufacturer doesn't state a figure, the row says so rather than being quietly filled in. The absence is information.

How this is funded

Strand & Steam earns a commission when you buy through our links, as a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. It costs you nothing extra, and it never decides which tool we pick or which one we name as the skip — the skip is the pick that costs us money, and every roundup has one.
