Set your expectations properly
Hot air brushes are marketed as one-tool solutions and on fine or medium hair they broadly are. On genuinely dense hair they are not, and the mismatch is the single biggest reason people are disappointed by one.

Two of the three brushes here publish no wattage at all, which is typical of the category and the reason no running cost renders for them.
The method that makes it work
- Squeeze with a towel, do not rub. Water removed mechanically is water you do not have to evaporate — and on dense hair that is a lot of water.
- Rough-dry to eighty percent with a dryer, no brush, medium heat. This is the step that makes everything after it reasonable.
- Section properly and clip. Four sections minimum on dense hair, and take sub-sections the brush can actually get through.
- Lift at the root first, then pull through. Volume is created in the first inch; the rest of the stroke is smoothing.
- Finish each section on cool. Hair sets in the shape it cools into, and on heavy hair gravity will pull out anything you released warm.
Barrel size on dense hair
Larger, generally. A big barrel holds more hair per section, which means fewer sections and a shorter session, and heavy hair pulls a tight shape out anyway so the extra curl a small barrel gives you is wasted.

The heat caution
A hot air brush is not a low-heat tool by definition. It applies heat for as long as you hold it against a section, and on dense hair people hold it longer precisely because it feels gentler than an iron. Total exposure is what matters, and a long session with a mild tool can exceed a short one with a harsh tool.
