Blow-Dry Brushes
The Best Blow-Dry Brushes for Wavy Hair in 2026
The one hair type this whole category was designed around. The trick is smoothing the frizz without pressing out the wave.
Updated September 2026 · Sawyer V.
Wavy hair is the type hot air brushes suit best: enough movement to shape with tension, not so much pattern that it needs a diffuser. Choose on barrel diameter and on whether the tool has a cool setting — that is what fixes the shape without a second hot pass.

1. The cool setting that keeps the bend
Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus hair dryer and hot air brush
Best for: Waves you want smoothed, not straightened
Four heat settings including a genuine cool option, a detachable head for cleaning, and a four-year warranty.
A cool setting is the specification for wavy hair. Hair sets as it cools, so a cool pass with the brush still under tension locks in a smoothed wave. Released warm, the same section lifts and frizzes within minutes.
The detachable head is the durability feature: lint collects on the grill behind the bristles, airflow drops, and an airflow-starved brush runs hotter for longer. A head that comes off can be cleaned.
Four years is the longest published warranty of any brush in this registry, against T3’s two and L’ange’s one.
What’s wrong with it
Revlon publishes no wattage, weight, cord length or voltage - four blank rows on an otherwise strong sheet.

What it costs to run for a year
Revlon does not publish a wattage for this tool, so there is nothing honest to compute. The formula is watts ÷ 1,000 × hours a year × your rate per kWh; if you find a rating plate on the handle, 65 hours a year and 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour will get you the rest of the way.
2. Round barrel for a deliberate bend
T3 AireBrush Round ionic blow-dry brush
Best for: Adding shape rather than removing it
A round barrel with SmoothGrip bristles and separate quick-dry and style attachments, at a published 1,200 W.
A round barrel does something an oval paddle cannot: it puts a deliberate curve into the ends rather than flattening the whole length. On wavy hair that is usually the goal — keep the movement, lose the frizz.
Shipping two attachments is the useful design. Rough-dry with the quick-dry head, finish with the style head, and the hair spends less total time at temperature than it would doing both jobs with one barrel.
1,200 W published, 16 oz without the cord, an 8 ft swivel cord and three heat settings.
What’s wrong with it
No published voltage, a two-year warranty, and 16 oz is on the heavier side for a long session.

What it costs to run for a year
$14.31 a year
1,200 W × 65 hours a year = 78.0 kWh, at 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour. The hours assume 15 minutes a session, 5 days a week — that is an assumption, not a measurement, so swap in your own if it is wrong.
3. Two barrel widths, both published
L'ange Le Volume Brush Dryer
Best for: Matching barrel size to wave width
A titanium oval barrel in 60 mm or 75 mm with all three temperatures published, topping out at 225.7°F.
Wave width varies a lot between heads, and barrel diameter is what decides whether you smooth a wave or erase it. Publishing two specific barrel sizes — 60 mm and 75 mm — lets you pick rather than accept.
It is also the only hot air brush here that tells you, in degrees, what it will do: 95.4°F, 178.9°F and 225.7°F. That ceiling is gentle by any standard in this category.
1.1 lb published and a cleaning brush in the box. The cord row states 6.6 ft and 2.4 m on the same line, which cannot both be true; we report it as published.
What’s wrong with it
125 V only, a one-year warranty, and no published speed settings.

The one we'd skip
Revlon Salon One-Step hair dryer and volumizer
Best for: Nobody, once you know why
The same four-year warranty on a brush whose head is non-detachable, so the grill behind it cannot be cleaned.
We would not buy this version. Hair, lint and product migrate through the bristles and settle on the grill behind them. With a removable head that is a two-minute clean; without one it is permanent.
The failure is gradual and easy to misread as the tool being cheap: airflow drops month by month, the brush compensates by running hotter for longer, and the drying time you bought it for quietly disappears.
Revlon also publishes no heat-setting count for this model, where the One-Step Volumizer Plus publishes four including cool. Spend the same money on the detachable version.
What’s wrong with it
A non-detachable head makes the airflow path impossible to clean, and no heat settings are published.

Why this category fits wavy hair
A hot air brush applies tension while the water leaves the hair, which is exactly what a wave needs: enough pull to lay the cuticle flat, not so much heat that the pattern is pressed out. Straight hair does not need the tension and tightly curled hair needs a diffuser instead, which is why this tool lands where it does.
The enemy is humidity rather than the tool. Keratin takes up water from the air and the effect rises sharply above roughly 60–70 percent relative humidity Breakspear et al., International Journal of Cosmetic Science, which is why a smoothed wave comes apart on a muggy walk. See humidity and styling.
Barrel size, by wave
Matching the barrel to what you want back
| Barrel | What it does to a wave |
|---|---|
| Oval paddle, wide (75 mm) | Smooths and elongates; least wave left |
| Oval paddle, narrow (60 mm) | Smooths but keeps some bend |
| Round barrel | Adds a deliberate curve at the ends |
Diameter decides how much wave survives. Temperature does not - it only decides how much the hair pays.
The barrel size page has the full mapping across lengths.
Technique, which matters more than the purchase
- Rough-dry to about 80 percent first. A brush used on soaking hair spends most of the session evaporating rather than shaping.
- Work with the wave, not against it. Follow the direction the hair already falls; fighting it is what produces frizz rather than shape.
- Hold tension until the section is cool. The single highest-return habit in this whole category.
- Leave the last two inches alone if you want the wave to read as natural.
If you want the wave back at the end of the week
Wavy hair is the type that benefits most from restyling without rewashing, and a heated brush with no fan is the right tool for that particular day — see refreshing second-day hair. For the wider set, every tool for wavy hair covers dryers and irons too.
Questions people actually ask
Will a blow-dry brush straighten my waves?
It smooths them rather than straightening them, which is usually the point. How much wave survives is set by barrel diameter - a wide oval paddle elongates most, a round barrel keeps a deliberate bend.
What size barrel is best for wavy hair?
A 60 mm oval if you want to keep some movement, 75 mm if you want it elongated, and a round barrel if you want a curve at the ends. Wave width varies between heads, so match the barrel to your own.
Why does my blow-dry brush finish frizz up later?
Because hair takes up water from the air, and the effect rises sharply above roughly 60 to 70 percent relative humidity. Finishing each section on a cool setting while it is still under tension is the best defense.
Is a hot air brush or a diffuser better for wavy hair?
A brush if you want the wave smoothed and shaped, a diffuser if you want it defined and enhanced. They are opposite goals, and wavy hair is the one type where both are reasonable.
