The dryer matters as much as the iron
Half of a silk press happens before the iron is switched on. Hair that has been blow-dried straight and smooth needs fewer iron passes than hair that has been dried roughly, and the difference is often two passes per section across a whole head.

Is a 1 inch or 1.25 inch plate better for a silk press?
A wider plate covers dense hair in fewer passes, which is the main variable that decides damage. A 1 inch plate is easier to control near the root and around the hairline. On thick 4C hair the wider plate usually wins on total passes.
Why does my silk press revert so quickly?
Because keratin takes up moisture from the air, and the effect accelerates sharply above roughly 60 to 70 percent relative humidity. Reversion in humid conditions is the hair behaving normally, not the iron failing.
Can a silk press cause permanent heat damage?
Yes. The clearest sign is a section that no longer reverts to its curl pattern when wet while the rest of the head does. That change is structural and cannot be reversed by conditioning.
