On long hair the half-inch diameter works against you twice. It wraps the least hair per pass, so you do the most sections and apply the most heat across the head. And it produces a ringlet, which on long hair drops under its own weight faster than a looser curl does.

Curling long hair is not harder than curling short hair. It is the same action repeated many more times, and every repetition is another heat application on the same head.
That reframes what you are shopping for. You are not looking for the hottest tool or even the gentlest one — you are looking for whatever reduces the number of times you have to do the action.

Your ends are two years old
Hair grows at roughly half an inch a month, so hair past the shoulder blades has tips that have been on your head for two years or more. That is not a metaphor for damage — it is measurable.
Researchers cutting hair into segments from root to tip found that concentrations of free polar lipids and covalently bound fatty acids decreased steadily along the fiber, with a significant reduction in tensile properties across the same span — Duvel et al., International Journal of Cosmetic Science.
Practically: the setting that is fine at your mid-lengths is being applied to hair with less structure at the ends. Leave the last inch or two out of the curl entirely — it looks more current anyway — and use a tool that lets you drop a step for the lower sections. Gravity is the other enemy
Long hair is heavy hair, and a curl in it is fighting its own weight from the moment you release it. This is why long-haired people so often conclude their curls “do not hold” when the real problem is that they were never set.
Two things fix most of it. Let each curl cool completely before it takes any weight — pinning the curl to your head while it cools is the classic technique for exactly this reason. And go one step tighter than the finished look you want, because a curl in long hair relaxes further than the same curl in short hair.

How long should this take
