For children’s hair the specifications that matter are a published low temperature, an automatic shut-off and gentle detangling. Most sessions need no heated tool at all — the biggest wins here are a wide-tooth comb, a microfiber towel and time.

Start with no heat at all
The honest first answer: most children’s hair does not need a heated tool. Detangling and drying gently solves the majority of the problem, and it is free.
Combing force is a real, measurable mechanical load Bloch et al., International Journal of Dermatology, and it is the thing most likely to cause tears and breakage in a child’s routine rather than heat. The auto shut-off and the temperature lock are the reasons this appears here. In a busy house the tool that turns itself off is worth more than the tool with one more setting, and a lock stops a curious hand moving the number.
It has no fan, so it works only on hair that is already dry. That makes it a smoothing tool for an older child rather than part of a wash routine.
