Dyson Supersonic vs T3 Featherweight StyleMax

Three quarters of a pound apart, with the heavier one carrying the attachments. That is the whole decision.

Updated September 2026 · Sawyer V.

Dyson publishes 1,600 W, four heat settings with a cold shot, three speeds, 1.8 lb and three attachments. T3 publishes five heat settings, three speeds, 16.6 oz and a 9 ft cord, with no wattage at all. Buy the T3 for a long session, the Dyson for a mixed household.

The weight gap is the honest headline

16.6 oz is about 1.04 lb, so the T3 is roughly three quarters of a pound lighter than the Dyson — and the measurement bases differ, because T3 excludes the cord and Dyson does not say. Treat the gap as indicative rather than exact; the ordering is not in doubt.

Three quarters of a pound sounds trivial written down and is not trivial held above your shoulder for fifteen minutes. On long or dense hair the tool that is still comfortable at minute twelve is the one that gets a careful finish rather than a rushed one, which is why weight leads this comparison rather than power.

The attachment set is the Dyson’s real argument

Dyson publishes three in the box: a styling concentrator, a diffuser and a wide-tooth comb. T3 publishes none for the Featherweight StyleMax, which is a blank row rather than a claim that the box is empty — but either way you cannot plan around what is not stated.

That matters in exactly one situation and it is a common one: more than one hair type in the house. A diffuser is not optional for a curl pattern, and a comb attachment applies tension while drying, which is the stage where a silk press is really decided — see dryers for a silk press.

Five settings against four, and one cold shot

T3 gives five heat settings and three speeds: fifteen combinations, more granular than anything else in this registry. Dyson gives four heat settings and three speeds, but one of the four is a genuine cold shot.

Granularity helps most when you want to drop the heat for the finishing passes on hair that is nearly dry. A cold shot helps at the very end, because hair sets as it cools. Both are real; if your hair is fine or damaged the T3’s extra step is worth more, and if you style for hold the Dyson’s cold shot is.

The missing wattage, and what it costs you

T3 publishes no wattage on any product, so the Featherweight cannot be costed to run or compared on power. Dyson publishes 1,600 W, which at the U.S. average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour and 65 hours a year works out at about $19.07 in electricity.

The whole category spans under eight dollars a year, so this is information rather than an argument — see running costs. It is still a gap: a brand that publishes weight to a tenth of an ounce has the power figure and chooses not to print it.

Which one lasts longer

Both publish a two-year warranty, so the tie-breaker is the failure mode rather than the term. Dryers die at the motor, and motors die because the filter is choked with lint - which is a maintenance question rather than a build-quality one.

Neither maker publishes a filter-cleaning interval, so treat it as monthly on a tool used several times a week. A dryer that is losing airflow runs hotter for longer to do the same job, which costs your hair as well as the motor. How to clean a hair dryer takes about two minutes.

The other common death is the cord, at the two inches where it meets the handle. Dyson publishes 8.6 ft and T3 publishes 9 ft, and the longer cord is the one more likely to sit slack rather than under tension at the strain relief - a small point that decides more dryers than either brand would like.

Who should buy which

Buy the T3 Featherweight StyleMax if

  • Your hair is long or dense and sessions run past ten minutes.
  • You want the most published heat-and-speed granularity here.
  • Your arm, shoulder or wrist is the limiting factor.
  • You already own a diffuser, or do not need one.

Buy the Dyson Supersonic if

  • More than one hair type shares the bathroom.
  • You need a diffuser and a comb attachment without a second purchase.
  • You want a published wattage and a genuine cold shot.
  • You can live with the heaviest dryer in this registry.

Buy neither if the priority is a light tool you can also take abroad. Neither is dual voltage. The ghd Flight+ publishes dual voltage at 0.99 lb, and the L’ange Axia is lighter still at 0.7 lb but stays home.

1,600 W is less power than a drugstore dryer draws, and Dyson publishes that openly — the pitch is airflow and heat control, not wattage.

Questions people actually ask

Is the T3 Featherweight lighter than the Dyson Supersonic?

Yes. T3 publishes 16.6 oz without the cord, about 1.04 lb, and Dyson publishes 1.8 lb. The measurement bases differ so treat the gap as indicative, but the ordering is not in question.

Does the T3 Featherweight come with a diffuser?

T3 does not publish an attachment list for it, so we cannot tell you. Dyson publishes three in the box - a concentrator, a diffuser and a wide-tooth comb - which is the clearer answer if you need one.

Which is better for curly hair?

The Dyson, on published evidence, because a diffuser is essential for a curl pattern and Dyson states one is included. T3 leaves the row blank.

Can either one be used abroad?

No. Dyson publishes 120 V and T3 publishes 125 V, so both are North American only. A converter rated for a heating appliance of this size is not a practical travel item.
