The floor is the comparison
280°F is the lowest published starting temperature of any plate tool in this registry. ghd's fixed 365°F is a moderate, defensible number for most hair — but it is a number you cannot go below.
Eighty-five degrees at the bottom of the range is where the difference lands, because damage is done at the top of what you actually use. The counter-argument is real: on coarse or resistant hair, 280°F will not straighten in one pass, and more passes at a lower temperature is not automatically gentler than fewer at a higher one. ghd's fixed number exists precisely so you stop negotiating with the dial.
36 W, and why it is not a typo
The Le Duo is a plate styler with an airflow channel rather than a blower, so its power draw sits two orders of magnitude below a hair dryer. At the U.S. average residential rate and 65 hours a year, 36 W costs about 43 cents in electricity annually.
ghd publishes no wattage on the Platinum+, so it cannot be costed at all. On an iron this matters little either way — see running costs — but it is one more row where L’ange fills in what ghd leaves blank.
Titanium against precision-milled plates
L’ange publishes titanium floating plates with rounded edges at 3.5 × 1 in. ghd publishes precision-milled floating high-gloss plates at 1 in.
Titanium heats and recovers faster, which suits coarse hair and is less forgiving of a paused pass. The rounded edges are the mitigation, and they matter on a tool aimed at people working close to the root.
